I have just spent the last 14 hours producing a data-base system to fully automate the club ranking system. It also provides new facilities and more data options for future, it wil be easier to maintain and quicker to process. Furthermore it will be less error prone than using the old spread sheet and more adaptable for future use. Finally it looks really cute on the screen.
After I had finished my "back of the envelope design", I got to thinking, I wonder what would have happened if I had used modern design and coding principles that are used in the modern computer industry today. A wry smile crossed my face and my thoughts were almost blurted out loud:
"Fook it would have taken me 6 weeks, use double the disk space, would run at half the speed, have less functions and be full of bugs - would need beta testing then would be just about finished for the end of the season. And if I ever had to change the tourney rules I'd have to re-design/program the whole damned lot."
.... And people ask me why I left the computer industry!
